The New Castle Red Hurricanes open the 2002 season with high hopes and headed north to Greenville to face the AAA Trojans.

Greenville, a PIAA Playoff participant last year, with a large front line expected to be a formidable foe for the Canes.

The Hurricanes received the opening kickoff and proceeded to march down the field 61 yards in 10 plays and took an early lead on a two yard run by Zach Mariacher. Following the PAT by Joey Harvey the Canes lead 7-0.

Greenville got on the board in the second period on a touchdown pass from 27 yards out but a bobbled snap led to a blocked PAT and the Canes held the lead at 7-6.

The Hurricanes quickly responded as Leon Ward returned the ensuing kickoff 74 yards. Two plays later the Ross Crist crossed the goal-line from 13 yards out to put the Canes on top 13-6. Another Harvey kick made it 14-6.

Greenville got only two plays on their next possession as Cameron Reid pulled in an interception to get the ball back for the Hurricanes at the Greenville 42.

Crist then hit Steven Threats with a pass to the Trojan 20 but it was called back by a holding penalty. Another penalty during the drive stalled the Canes and they were forced to punt.

Allan Billyk’s punt bounced out at the five backing Greenville up at the 7:08 mark of the second period.

The Red Hurricanes defense held Greenville on a three and out and forced the Trojans to punt to the speedy Ward.

Ward gathered in the punt at the Greenville 42 and returned it to the 20 setting up another Hurricanes’ score.

Four plays later Crist hit Noah Elliot with a 6-yard pass at 3:50 for another Canes touchdown. Harvey’s kick was good and New Castle led 21-6.

Greenville received the kickoff to start the second half and held the ball for over six minutes before punching in the score to close to 21-12. The Trojans went for two but the pass went incomplete and the Canes held the nine-point lead.

This time the Hurricanes went three and out having held the ball for only 1:30 and punted back to Greenville.

The Trojans then began another drive and held the ball for the rest of the third quarter. On their third play of the fourth period Greenville went for it on fourth and 13 from the New Castle 28 but their pass fell incomplete and the Canes took possession.

After one play, Robert Calhoun broke loose for a 64-yard touchdown run at 10:10 and the Canes lead jumped to 28-12 after another successful Harvey kick.

After being beaten during the third period the Canes defense came back alive in the fourth as Threats intercepted on the Trojans next possession and the ‘D’ held Greenville to three and out on their last possession of the game.

The Canes start 1-0 with a 28-12 win at Greenville.

Ross Crist was 5-10 passing for 64 yard and had 64 yard rushing on 7 carries. Robert Calhoun rushed for 96 yards on 11 carries while Zach Mariacher ran 8 time for 38 yards.
