The struggling Red Hurricanes continued to look for an identity tonight in a 67-43 loss at the hands of the North Allegheny Tigers.

The Canes a team struggling for offense ran into a team that couldn’t miss. North Allegheny opened the game with a "three" and made 11 for the game, scoring 33 points from behind the arc.

The Hurricanes after a ‘three’ by David Richards that tied the game at three, never led and saw the Tigers steadily pull away.

The Canes did close to within one, 11-10 at the 1:40 mark of the first quarter, following a 5-0 spurt highlighted by as baseline slam by Devin Taylor but that was as close as they got.

For most of the season, defensively the Canes have played a two-three zone relying on their three 6’5" front court men to control the boards.

Tonight in order to slow down the Tigers senior guard E.J. Kusyner, who had six ‘threes’ and 34 points in a win last Tuesday over Pine-Richland, the Canes started the game in a "diamond and one" with Donovon Jones as the chaser.

Last season the Hurricanes used the "diamond and one" often and successfully against high-powered scorers and opponents.

The strategy worked perfectly to stop Kusyner as he only touched the ball 9 times in the first quarter and netted only three points, hitting his only shot.

The other Tigers picked up the slack however and took a 15-10 lead after one quarter.

The second quarter started with another ‘three’ by the Tigers to up the lead to 18-10.

The Hurricanes remained in their "diamond and one" patiently trying to whittle away at the Tigers lead while trying to keep Kusyner from burying them.

The defensive strategy against Kusyner again worked as he touched the ball only six times and had only a ‘two’ and a turnover to show for it.

But again the other Tigers responded. They hit four ‘threes’ in the period and missed only four shots, one of them was put back in and another was blocked by Taylor.

New Castle trailed 34-16 at the 2:09 mark before Taylor hit two ‘threes’ sandwiched around a Tiger ‘three’ and the Cane trailed at halftime by 15, 37-22.

Taylor opened the third quarter with a nice inside move for a score to close the score to 37-24 and the Hurricanes switched out of their "diamond and one" and into their half court trap.

The trap brought about a Tigers’ turnover and Taylor scored again, this time on a pretty reverse lay-up to get the Canes within 11.

But a three point play by the Tigers just 20 seconds later put the lead back to 40-26.

Keenan Moore drained a ‘three’ at 5:55 to narrow the margin back to 11, 40-29 but North Allegheny’s next five scores were all ‘threes’ (three by Kusyner) followed by a couple ‘twos’ while the Canes could manage only five more points in the quarter.

After three periods North Allegheny led 59-34.

Taylor with a hoop at 5:11 of the fourth quarter ended a Hurricanes’ scoring drought of five minutes 19 seconds.

Taylor with the Canes’ next basket at 3:53 scored his twentieth point of the contest.

The reserves finished it out with William Martin scoring twice on nice slashing drives to the hoop.

Devin Taylor led the Hurricanes with 20 points and seven rebounds.

Notes: The Canes had only eight defensive rebounds in the game and only two in the first half.

New Castle had 10 turnovers and shot 39% from the field.

The Hurricanes substituted early apparently searching for answers. Joe Harvey came in at guard during the second quarter while Jr. Tony Andrews saw considerable action early in the game.
