Last month after North Allegheny had ripped through the Red Hurricanes by 17 points on Tigers’ home floor, a New Castle fan yelled to the Tigers coach Dave DeGregorio, "We’ll see you up in New Castle next month, things will be different there." To which DeGregorio responded by licking his index finger and drawing an imaginary line in the air and saying with a smart-alec tone, "I’ll mark it on my calendar."

After watching the Canes and Tigers play last night it is apparent that DeGregorio did mark it on his calendar but the Hurricanes fan was a prophet, as things were indeed different at the New Castle High School Field House, and the Red Hurricanes knocked off the first place Tigers 62-57.

It is unlikely that either team has ever played so well at the onset of a game. The Canes missed only four of 15 field goal attempts in the period (two the misses were shots where the Canes shooter was fouled) and North Allegheny missed only two of 10 in the first 6:30 where the shooter wasn’t fouled.

Demetrius Searcy scored 16 points in the period on six of seven from the field (including two ‘threes’) and two of two free throws and the Canes led by five, 23-18 after one quarter.

North Allegheny who started a 6’8" player and one 6’7" could not contain Searcy or keep the ball from getting into him near the hoop during the period.

Anthony Harvey and Thomas Canal hit shots in the second period to move the Canes’ lead out to nine, 27-18 at the 5:44 mark and the Hurricanes defense held the Tigers with out a point until they scored a basket at 4:55.

The team exchanged free throws to make it 29-22 at 4:03.

Anthony Harvey then hit a ‘three’ at 3:50 to give the Canes their biggest lead of the night, 32-22.

North Allegheny answered quickly with a ‘three’ of their own and after a Hakeem Fitzpatrick free throw the Tigers hit another ‘three’ and ran off eight straight points to tie the game at halftime, 33-33.

David Richards at 2:31 and Searcy at 1:24 each received their third fouls and left the game helping to fuel the Tigers run.

Canal hit a ‘three’ to open the third quarter and the Canes grabbed a 36-33 lead.

The Tiger then made two straight baskets to take the lead 37-36 at 5:35.

The action was back and forth between the teams and the lead changed hands seven times in the quarter with the Canes holding a 44-43 edge after three quarters.

North Allegheny took back the lead with a hoop at 7:51 of the final period but Anthony Harvey hit two free throws at 7:33 to put the Canes back on top.

The Tigers tied the game at 50 with 3:43 left to play but Canal nailed a ‘three’ to give the Canes a lead they would not again relinquish.

North Allegheny scored at 2:20 to get back within in one 53-52 but a beautiful spin move by Anthony Harvey put the lead back to three, 55-52.

After a Hurricanes steal Richards hit two free throws upping the lead to five at 1:15.

The Tigers missed on a ‘three’ point attempt and the Canes then decided to pull the ball out and make the Tigers foul.

Tony Andrews hit the front of a one-and-one with 55 seconds left to put the Hurricanes up 58-52.

The Tigers rebounded but turned it right back over to the Hurricanes and Anthony Harvey was fouled. He made both ends of the one-and-one putting the lead at eight, 60-52.

North Allegheny hit a long ‘three’ and Anthony Harvey was fouled again. This time however he missed both of his shots giving the Tigers the ball trailing by five, 60-55 with 36 seconds to play.

The Tigers hit a ‘two’ to close to within three, 60-57 at the 29 second mark and Anthony Harvey was called for charging while driving the ball up the sideline in front of the Tigers bench, giving the ball back to North Allegheny.

The Tigers however missed their next shot which was a ‘two’ and Harvey grabbed the rebound.

This time he made both free throws putting the Canes back up by five, 62-57 with just 11 seconds to play.

North Allegheny missed two layups as time expired and the Canes had pinned a second section loss on the Tigers.
