Excitement was in the air tonight at Taggart Stadium as the defending WPIAL Champions opened their title defense. In the air literally, as during the pregame ceremonies featured two sky divers landing at midfield carrying with them the game ball and a WPIAL Championship pennant.

New Castle started slowly and showed some opening game jitters allowing Seton LaSalle to take an early leads 6-0 and 12-7. The Canes soon got their bearings and never looked back at they won going away 42-12

The Canes received the opening kick off but could only move from their own 39 to just across midfield. The drive that included a couple fumbled snaps by sophomore QB Ryan Vivelo (not a sign of things to come) stalled and the Canes were forced to punt.

Seton LaSalle then used their vaunted passing attack to score quickly and took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter.

The offensive experience of the Red Hurricanes showed on the next drive as the Canes went 53 yards in nine plays over 2:19 seconds capped by a John Rosati five yard run at the 11:56 mark to tie it at six. Pasquale Romano’s first of six perfect PAT’s made it 7-6 New Castle.

The Rebels took the kickoff and began a drive at the New Castle 26 yard line. The 10 play drive by Seton LaSalle included just one run and it went for minus yards. However a perfectly set up and executed pump and go turned into a 41 yard TD pass for the Rebels and a 12-7 lead.

New Castle though was just warming up. Seton LaSalle’s kickoff went into the endzone so the Canes started from their own 20. Devon James ran for four yards, Andy Fry for eight, James for 12 more. Then John Rosati went for 13 followed by James for five. A pass from Ryan Vivelo to tight end Dustin Elliot went for five yards to the Seton LaSalle 33. James ran for two more but a penalty moved the Canes back to the 36. That’s when Vivelo hooked up with Gerald Guido for a 36 yard touchdown pass the give the Hurricanes the lead for good.

Three and out by the Rebels and the Canes were back in business but this time even farther away at their own 18. This drive just like the last the New Castle used a variety of weapons to move down the field. The drive was highlighted by John Rosati’s 51 yard run and a 23 yarder by Devon James. With only .37 seconds left in the half the Canes were at the Seton LaSalle 14 when a pass to Elliot and a run by Rosati got the ball to the one. A spike by Vivelo stopped the clock and Rosati on the next play got into the endzone with only .13 seconds in the half. Canes led 21-12. The dive 82 yard in 9 plays and 2:12.

Romano kicked off to the Rebels to open the second half but again three plays and a punt and New Castle was back on offense at their own 47. 53 yards later helped by runs of 14 by Rosati, 17 by James and 13 and one (for the score) by Justin Sheldone and with 8:30 to play in the third period the Hurricanes were up 28-12

Once again Seton got no first downs and punted it back to the Canes. From the Rebel 42 yard line New Castle road mostly Sheldone on this drive as he accounted for 29 yard including a seven yard scoring run at 4:14. The Canes now led 35-12.

Seton LaSalle finally started to move the ball on their next possession. A 29 yard pass got the ball into Cane territory but after a couple short completions Justin Finamore sacked QB for a 10 yard loss setting up a 4th and 22.

The Red Hurricanes got the ball back at their own 30. After runs of one yard by Sheldone and eight by Andy Fry, Sheldon broke loose for a 61 yard jaunt for a score. With only nine seconds gone in the final period New Castle led by the final margin 42-12.

The Rebel’s again tried only three plays before punting and the Hurricane reserves took over. After eight plays New Castle was at the Rebel 2 yard line. Qualin Davis smashed into the line but the ball squirted loose and Seton LaSalle recovered.

The game ended with the Canes on top 42-10.

Both John Rosati and Justin Sheldone rushed for over 100 yards. Rosati had 13 carries for 116 and Sheldone had 11- 125.

Next week the Canes are home to Norwin.
