The Hurricanes went into tonight’s game planning to run a pressure defense from the opening tip hoping to exploit Shaler’s inexperience at guard. The strategy worked as the Canes managed numerous steals (seven in the second period alone) which lead to easy baskets and an easy Section 3 win, 92-56.

Shaler scored the first basket to grab the early 2-0 lead.

Joe Carter then made a free throw for the Canes’ first point at 6:39.

Another Titan buck at 5:50 and the Canes trailed 4-1

Dom Joseph scored at 5:13 on a put-back then a steal and a drive by Dante Spino put the Canes ahead 5-4. Spino, who was fouled on his layup, made the free throw and the Canes had a lead they would never relinquish.

Mark DeMonaco made two free throws at 3:34 and the stretching lead to 9-4.

The Hurricanes out scored the Titans 9-4 again over the rest of the period and led 18-8 after one. Shaler had narrowed the gap to 12-8 but Carter hit back to back ‘threes’ to widen the margin.

The Titans scored the first points of the second period but Leon Ward answered to keep the lead at 10.

After a steal, Chris Cain laid one in to begin a defense fueled 12-2 run by the Canes, that saw the lead jump to 20, 32-10 and the rout was on.

New Castle out scored Shaler 13-10 the rest of the quarter and the lead was 45-22 at intermission.

The third period started with the Canes going up 50-22 on five straight Spino points.

Shaler then hit a bucket as 6:30 and to begin an 11-5 spurt to get back to within 22 of the Canes, 55-33.

That’s when Vojtech Hybler made his presence known by scoring six straight points, off a put-back, a layup from a nice feed and a dribble drive to the hoop. The Hurricanes lead was 61-33 with 3:00 left in the quarter.

Hybler’s six points started a 19-0 run to end the period. New Castle led 74-33 after three.

Chris Cain and Leon Ward each had eight in the 29 point third quarter.

Shaler outscored New Castle 22-19 in the fourth for a final score of 92-56.

Six Hurricanes scored in double figures with Dom Joseph leading the way with 17. Leon Ward ended with 15 while Chris Cain and Dante Spino each added 12. Mark DeMonaco scored 11 and Vojtech Hybler 10.
