The New Castle Red Hurricane has been upgraded from a category one storm to a category two and is beginning to show signs of becoming a major event in W. Pa. this fall. Friday night after nearly fizzling and blowing out to sea the Hurricane suddenly regained strength and sent the Central Catholic Viking to the bottom of the sea. The Canes took an early lead but fell behind in the second period and trailed for most of the game until late in the fourth quarter when John Rosati recovered a Central fumble near midfield. Trailing 16-14, New Castle was able to get close and on a fourth and one Corey Lemmon worked his magic and squirmed into the end zone from seven yards out. The two point conversion put the Canes on top to stay, 22-16.

New Castle won the coin toss and opted to defer to the second half. Central Catholic then proceeded to fumble on their first play and the Canes’ Nick Marmo recovered on the Central 30.

The Hurricanes wasted no time to make the Vikings pay as QB Corey Lemmon hit John Rosati with a pass for a 30 yard touchdown. Pasquale Romano missed the extra point but the Canes were up early 6-0.

Central lost 14 yards in their next three plays but a roughing the kicker penalty against New Castle gave the Vikings new life. From their own 35 Central Catholic took just seven plays to reach the end zone. New Castle’s Sean Runyon blocked the PAT and the score was tied at six.

The Vikings scored again to start the second period to grab a 13-6 advantage.

Justin Sheldone hit pay dirt from six yards out just minutes later and the Canes were back on top 14-13.

That lead was short lived as Central hit a 37 yard field goal before the half and led 17-14 at intermission.

In the second half Rosati broke loose for an 80 yard touchdown run only to see it called back because of a holding call. Another scoring opportunity that went for naught was a 38 yard field goal attempt by Romano that was blocked.

Central had the ball with just four minutes showing on the clock when running back Dino DiNardo fumble and Rosati recovered near midfield.

Eight plays later Lemmon had come to the aid of his teammates again and the Canes were on top 20-16. Sheldone ran in the conversion and the Red Hurricanes lead was 22-16.
