The only real contest at Taggart Stadium Friday night occurred before the opening kick-off. That was the election of the New Castle High School Homecoming Queen. Which was won by Kristen Vivelo. After the kick-off it was all Canes as the home team scored 55 points in the first half to lead 55-14 at intermission. With a 35 or greater lead in the second half the two year old mercy rule kicked in to keep the clock running to not prolong the misery. The Red Hurricanes went on to rout the Shaler Titans 62-36.

Shaler started by booting the kick-off out of bounds giving the Canes the ball at the 35. Eleven running plays later Corey Lemmon cracked the end zone from one yard out to put the New Castle ahead at the 7:13 mark. Pasquale Romano missed the PAT so the Canes led 6-0.

The drive was highlighted by runs of 14 and 24 by Lemmon and a carry for three yard on a fourth and one by Justin Sheldone.

Romano’s kick to the Titans was fumbled at the 10 and rolled back to the six. There it was picked up and carried nonstop 94 yards to the New Castle end zone and in just 14 seconds the game was tied at six. Shaler also missed the PAT to keep the game knotted.

The Canes began their next possession at the 20 following a Titan kick into the end zone. This time after running down the field to the Shaler 33 in seven plays New Castle crossed up the Titans when Lemmon hit tightend Dustin Elliot in stride with a quick pass and Elliot rambled the last 30 yards for the score. The Hurricanes scored two on the conversion when Lemmon hit Elliot again. The Canes now led 14-6 with 3:15 left in the first period.

After the big return by the Titans on the first kick Romano rifled a low bullet on the ensuing kick. The ball hit a Shaler up man and was recovered by New Castle on the Shaler 47. Lemmon ran for five yards then on the next play faked to Sheldone up the middle then followed him into the hole and ran 42 yards for the score and the rout was on. Shaler was penalized on the PAT attempt so New Castle went for two. John Rosati took the pitch and the score was 22-6.

Another short intentional short kick by New Castle and Shaler started at their own 42. Sheldone sacked the QB for a six yard loss on the first play but Shaler moved into Cane territory with a 22 yard run on the next. On the next play a big hit by the Cane defense caused a fumble that was picked up by Lemmon and carried down to the Shaler 31.

Two plays later Rosati took a handoff from Lemmon, hit a big hole and ran to daylight. After a fumbled snap on the PAT the score was now 28-6, still in the first period.

The kick-off was yet another onside kick by the Canes. This one was also recovered by New Castle and the Hurricanes set up shop at the Shaler 45. Andy Fry ran for 20 yards then Lemmon for eight more as the first quarter ended. Four plays later Sheldone took it up the middle for the final yard at the 10:03 mark. Romano’s PAT was good and New Castle led 35-6.

Shaler moved the ball better on the next possession finally scoring again on a 39 yard pass. The two point conversion was good, 35-14 Canes.

New Castle took the kick-off and after just a short run Lemmon took things into his own hands again running 58 yards to paydirt. The kick was good, 42-14 New Castle.

Dustin Elliot intercepted the Titans on their next possession and the Cane offense took over at the Shaler 11. Fry for two, Rosati for 8 then Rosati for one more and the score. Another good kick and it was now 49-14 with five minutes left in the half.

New Castle took over near midfield after a punt on Shaler’s next possession. Runs by Sheldone, Rosati gave the Canes a second and nine at the 15. From there Lemmon carried it the last 15 yards at the 1:23 mark. The PAT was missed but the Canes were up by 41, 55-14. Lemmon finished with 190 yards rushing, all in the first half.

The Titans moved to the New Castle 15 before the half but tuned the ball over on downs on a fourth and goal.

Shaler received the second half kick-off and ran off 15 plays finally getting back on the continuously running scoreboard with 2:22 left in the third period. 55-20 Canes.

The Hurricane covered the Titans onside kick and went on offense them many reserves on the field. An eight play drive culminated with Greg Cameron crossing the goal line from eight yards out and New Castle led 61-22.

Shaler scored quickly on their next possession and got the ball back again in New Castle territory after the Canes went for it on fourth and 11. Shaler drove for their final score with 1:16 left making the final 62-36.
