The Canes entered tonight’s game at Seneca Valley with a 21-0 record but with little room for error. With a 9-0 section record they have a razor-thin one game grasp on sole ownership of first place in Section 3. North Allegheny with an 8-1 section record trails the Canes by just a game and will visit the New Castle Fieldhouse next Tuesday. Also Uniontown lurks with only one loss in the race for the #1 seed in the upcoming WPIAL playoffs.

With that in mind the Hurricanes made short work of the Raiders, at one time going on a 34-0 run over two periods and won easily 80-53.

Seneca Valley stayed close for the first three and a half minutes and even lead 8-7 at 4:47 until Dom Joseph made a free throw at 4:31 to tie the game. That was followed by a basket by Chris Cain and the rout was on. New Castle outscored the Raiders 10-2 the rest of the first period and led 20-12 after one.

Leon Ward hit a ‘three’ to start the second and after a steal hit another ‘three’ to give the Canes a 26-12 lead at 6:44.

Including Ward’s six, the Canes scored 21 straight points before Seneca Valley hit a basket with 3:28 left in the half. The Canes defense forced six turnovers during the run and things got so bad for the Raiders at one time, a trapped player threw the ball to a man waiting at the scorer’s table to enter the game.

Seneca scored again at 2:52 to make it 41-16 before Mark DeMonaco made two free throws at 2:42.

The Raiders hit at 2:24 then DeMonaco and Ralph Currie combined for seven points to end the quarter and the Cane s led 52-18 at the half.

Seneca Valley opened the scoring in the third and outscored the Hurricanes 15-6 the first four minutes of the quarter.

The Canes gathered themselves and scored 12 points the last 2:37 while limiting the Raiders to five and the lead was 32 after three periods, 70-38.

New Castle started the final period by missing their first two shots, giving the ball up twice and getting called for a technical foul. As a result Seneca Valley score the first eight points of the fourth.

Dom Joseph in for Cain outscored the Raiders 7-2 over the next 51 seconds to put the Canes up 77-48.

Two baskets by the Raiders and Joe Carter with a ‘two’ and Vojtech Hybler with a free throw ended the scoring as the Red Hurricanes won 80-53.

Mark DeMonaco led the Canes in scoring with 22 points. Dom Joseph added 17, Leon Ward tossed in 14. Hoover Gibson had 12 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots. Chris Cain was also in double figures with 10. Dante Spino missed his second game in a row due to a cut over his eye received in the North Hills game.
